A mother and her son were shot during an apparent domestic violence dispute at an apartment complex in Lewisville on Tuesday night.

The 27-year-old woman sustained gunshot wounds to her leg while her 4-year-old son was grazed in his stomach, said Lewisville police spokesperson Matt Martucci, per The Dallas Morning News.

Lewisville police said that they received a call around 6:15 p.m. on February 28 regarding a domestic violence disturbance at the Park Timbers apartment complex, per CBS News.

After first responders arrived on the scene, the mother and child were taken to Medical City Lewisville for treatment, according to Martucci, per the DMN. Their injuries were non-life-threatening, and they are both expected to recover.

However, Lewisville Police Department is still looking for the suspect.

The unnamed male is believed to be the mother’s boyfriend but not the child’s father, according to the victim’s testimony.

Martucci told the DMN that after the shooting the suspect fled the scene, taking off through the apartment complex. Police have set up a perimeter to locate the suspect, who they say presents no immediate threat to the community, per the City of Lewisville.

As of the publishing date, the search was still ongoing.

Crimes involving guns have continued to be a persistent issue in the Dallas-Fort Worth Metroplex in 2023.

On February 23, a Fort Worth council member’s mother was injured after she was apparently shot through the door of her home that night, as previously reported by The Dallas Express.

The incident occurred after Graciela Flores, the mother of Councilman Carlos Flores, heard someone at her back door. Believing it to be a family member, she called out and was shot in her abdomen. Flores was later transported to Texas Health Harris Methodist Hospital Fort Worth and is expected to recover.

Another incident occurred that same night when a 13-year-old boy was shot in his home in North Dallas, as previously reported by The Dallas Express. The Dallas Police Department said the suspect was believed to be Randy Edwards, the boy’s father, and that he reportedly shot his son for “misbehaving.” The victim was last updated as being in stable condition at Children’s Medical Center Dallas.
