A former president of the Allen Professional Firefighters Association was sentenced on Wednesday to 13 months in federal prison for using union funds for personal expenses and then trying to conceal the theft.

Jeremy Painkin, 42, of Frisco, appeared before U.S. District Judge Richard Schell after pleading guilty to wire fraud.

He was also ordered to repay more than $108,000 in restitution.

Federal prosecutors said Painkin, who led the association from 2017 until his resignation in October 2023, spent organization money on luxury clothing, travel, event tickets, fuel, meals, and online shopping.

When the unauthorized purchases came to light, Painkin made false statements to fellow union members to cover them up, court records show.

The case was investigated by the FBI and prosecuted by Assistant U.S. Attorney William R. Tatum.

Allen city officials stressed that no taxpayer money or firefighter benefits were involved, noting that the Allen Professional Firefighters Association is an independent union separate from the fire department and has no role in managing pensions or city benefits. They added that Painkin has not served as an active firefighter since 2015, WFAA reported.
