A third-grade teacher at a Frisco elementary school has been arrested and charged with invasive visual recording following allegations of misconduct.
Michael Cheek, 48, who worked at Billy Gene Phillips Elementary School, faces a state jail felony that carries a potential penalty of 180 days to two years in jail and a fine of up to $10,000.
The Frisco Police Department launched an investigation after becoming aware of the claims and coordinated with the school district, leading to Cheek’s arrest on February 17.
The Frisco Independent School District confirmed it is aware of the case and has placed Cheek on administrative leave, barring him from district property.
“The safety and well-being of our students is our highest priority, and as soon as the District became aware of the allegations, we began working in full cooperation with the Frisco Police Department,” Frisco ISD said in a statement, CBS 11 reported. “We trust law enforcement to conduct a complete and thorough investigation into these allegations. We will continue to cooperate fully with law enforcement as the investigation moves forward.
“The District takes allegations of this nature very seriously. We know that families entrust us with their children every day, and any violation of that trust is unacceptable. When allegations of this nature arise, we move swiftly to protect our students and support law enforcement.”
District officials noted they are constrained in sharing details due to the active criminal investigation, but said counselors and administrators at Phillips Elementary are ready to assist students. Parents with questions about their children should contact the school.
Authorities urged anyone with details about the incident or similar matters to call the Frisco Police Department at (972) 292-6010. Anonymous tips can be sent by texting FRISCOPD followed by the information to 847411 (tip411) or via the Frisco PD app.
