Texas families have submitted over 100,000 applications for the state’s new school choice program in less than two weeks.

Gov. Greg Abbott announced the record-breaking demand, calling it the nation’s largest launch of such a program.

The Texas Education Freedom Account program represents a major shift in educational funding. Parents can now direct state dollars toward private schools, tutoring, and other approved educational expenses.

“The TEFA program receiving more than 100,000 applications in less than two weeks proves that families overwhelmingly want school choice,” said Governor Abbott. “Through this program, families will receive funds to send their children to a school that is the best fit for them.”

The program launched on February 4 with $1 billion in funding. Acting Comptroller Kelly Hancock oversees the initiative through the Texas Comptroller of Public Accounts.

Abbott praised Hancock’s dedication to implementing the program.

“I congratulate Acting Comptroller Kelly Hancock for his unwavering support and dedication to this program’s monumental success,” the governor said.

All Texas children who are U.S. citizens can apply through March 17. The program operates on a selection basis rather than on a first-come, first-served basis.

Families can use the funds for tuition, transportation, and other educational costs. Abbott emphasized the program helps families “regardless of their location or income.”

The legislation creating TEFA, Senate Bill 2, passed earlier this year.
