A gunshot struck 17-year-old passenger Geovani Rocha in the head. Police later upgraded Camargo Madrigal’s charge from aggravated assault with a deadly weapon to murder after medical personnel legally declared Rocha brain-dead.
The vehicle carrying Jose Camargo Madrigal collided with another vehicle around 11:30 p.m. on May 23 near Mansfield Highway and Seminary Drive, according to an arrest warrant affidavit reviewed by Fox 4 KDFW.
Investigators said both vehicles stopped at a red light at the intersection when Camargo Madrigal allegedly fired multiple shots into the other vehicle and fled the scene.
A gunshot struck 17-year-old passenger Geovani Rocha in the head. Police later upgraded Camargo Madrigal’s charge from aggravated assault with a deadly weapon to murder after authorities said Rocha was legally brain-dead.
Family members told Fox 4 KDFW that Rocha had just completed his junior year at Dunbar High School and had been out getting food with his brother and a friend at the time of the shooting.
Police said Forest Hill officers were already at the scene when Fort Worth officers arrived near East Seminary Drive around 11:40 p.m. Medics took Rocha to a hospital for treatment.
Investigators identified Camargo Madrigal through license plate reader cameras, witness statements, and aerial surveillance. Police later found the suspect vehicle, a Chevy Avalanche, parked behind a nearby residence.
Officers stopped another vehicle leaving the home after it allegedly ran a stop sign and found Camargo Madrigal in the backseat, according to the affidavit.
Police said Camargo Madrigal told investigators he and his family were on their way to buy baby formula at the time of the incident. Authorities said his son was driving the Avalanche while Camargo Madrigal sat in the front passenger seat.
According to police, Camargo Madrigal admitted firing the shots and told officers the firearm used, a 9mm Sig Sauer handgun, was at his residence. Investigators later recovered the weapon.
“The investigation is far from over,” Calzada told Fox 4. “We are going to go through both vehicles now that we have the suspect vehicle as well to see if there were any other weapons or anything else that led up to this violence.”
Police said homicide detectives are now leading the investigation.
Authorities transferred Camargo Madrigal to the Tarrant County Jail, where he remained Tuesday on a $200,000 bond.
A GoFundMe page is raising money to help cover Rocha’s funeral expenses.
