A Fannin County sheriff’s deputy was treated and released from a hospital after a man ambushed him with a scoped rifle Thursday afternoon in what authorities described as a planned attack.

The shooting happened around 3:30 p.m. when the deputy responded to a disturbance call in the 500 block of County Road 5012. The suspect, 35-year-old Cory Goode, opened fire from a concealed spot before the deputy could get out of his patrol vehicle, firing about 14 rounds and shattering the back window.

The deputy managed to exit the vehicle and take cover. When Goode lost sight of him, the suspect stepped into the open and killed himself with his own rifle. The entire encounter lasted about two minutes. The deputy did not fire his weapon and remained at the scene to secure it after the suicide.

The deputy was not struck by bullets but was cut by flying glass. He suffered bleeding from his head, face, arms, and legs before being treated and released.

Fannin County Sheriff Cody Shook called the attack deliberate.

“This was an orchestrated, planned, and intentional ambush with the clear intent to kill,” Shook said, Fox 4 KDFW reported.

He credited the deputy’s survival to quick thinking and training.

“He survived only by his rapid split-second reaction, his tactical training, and by the grace of God,” Shook said.

The call that brought the deputy to the home came from a family member concerned about Goode’s behavior. Authorities said the residence had a history of calls, though not all involving Goode.

Goode had a prior criminal record that included a 2008 drug possession arrest and a 2015 family assault arrest. He was not legally allowed to own the rifle used in the shooting.

The Texas Rangers are continuing the investigation. The deputy’s name has not been released.
