A Dallas police recruit was arrested in Garland for drug possession and illegally carrying a weapon.
Recruit Asher King, badge number 13069, faces charges of THC possession and unauthorized weapon carrying following his November 24 arrest by Garland police, according to a Dallas Police Department report.
The arrest highlights ongoing challenges in police recruitment and screening. King joined the Dallas Police Department in June 2025 and was training at the police academy.
Dallas Police Chief Daniel Comeaux condemned the recruit’s alleged actions.
“Behavior that violates the law or the standards of this Department is unacceptable. Even at the recruit level, we hold our members to the highest expectations,” Comeaux said.
“Our community deserves integrity from every member of this Department and conduct like this will not be tolerated,” he added.
The department placed King on administrative leave pending an internal investigation. His arrest comes as police departments nationwide struggle with recruitment and retention issues.
King had served less than six months with the department before his arrest. The charges suggest he was carrying a firearm without proper authorization alongside the drug possession allegation.
