Dallas police plan to update a 15-year-old suspect’s charge to manslaughter after 18-year-old Cristopher Nevarez died October 7, four days after a shooting.
The Dallas Police Department announced the development in an October 9 post on its DPD Beat blog. The juvenile remains in custody, according to the department.
Officers responded around 7:30 p.m. October 3 to a call at a hospital in the 8200 block of Walnut Hill Lane. Nevarez and a 15-year-old boy had arrived at the hospital in a private vehicle after a shooting at another location, police said.
Police said Nevarez appeared to have a gunshot wound to his neck and described his condition as critical. The boy had a gunshot wound to his hand.
Investigators later determined that the boy allegedly shot Nevarez from behind while sitting in a car and also shot himself in the hand, according to the department.
The Dallas Police Fugitive Unit arrested the juvenile October 5 on a warrant for aggravated assault with a deadly weapon. After Nevarez died October 7, police said they would update the charge to manslaughter. The announcement does not confirm that the charge change has occurred.
The department did not identify the juvenile or specify the shooting location, a motive, or the circumstances leading to the gunfire. Police continue to investigate under case number 145847-2026.
