A 17-year-old’s own 911 call helped police identify him as the alleged gunman who shot a DoorDash driver during a botched food delivery in Mesquite, Texas.
The October 27 shooting exposed a chaotic scene over a disputed delivery PIN code that escalated into gunfire, leaving the driver wounded and leading to a SWAT arrest.
Ledavion Sockwell faces aggravated assault charges after investigators unraveled conflicting witness accounts, Fox 4 KDFW reported.
The case hinged on Sockwell’s 911 call in which he allegedly told the operator: “He pulled a gun … he started shooting and got shot. Self-defense. He shot at us, and we shot back.”
Driver Manuel Gonzalez, 29, painted a different picture. He said the trouble began when the customers couldn’t provide the correct PIN for their order.
“They gave me the wrong pin, the wrong pin twice. You know, they tried to get the food from my hand, and I was refusing to give them the food because if I don’t get the pin, they can delete my account,” Gonzalez told police, per Fox 4. “As soon as they give me the right one, they went inside screaming a lot of things.”
Gonzalez said two men emerged from the Birch Bend home after the PIN dispute. One had shoulder-length braids and carried a gun.
The driver retrieved his own firearm but kept it pointed down, he claimed. The man with braids fired first, striking Gonzalez in the arm before the driver returned one shot, and then his weapon jammed.
Sockwell’s story crumbled under scrutiny. He initially told police an “unknown male” shot at Gonzalez while he fled inside for safety.
But the 911 recording contradicted that narrative, placing Sockwell at the scene as an active participant. Combined with the physical evidence and Gonzalez’s consistent statements, the recording proved decisive in leading to his arrest as the suspect.
Sockwell was taken into custody after SWAT officers forced entry into his home on Monday afternoon, where he lived with his mother. He is currently being held in the Dallas County jail, with a bond set at $150,000 on a charge of assault with a deadly weapon.
The investigation continues as detectives piece together the full sequence of events.
