The Denton Police Department is investigating a Thursday night shooting that left two people dead in southern Denton.

Denton police responded to a shooting call around 10 p.m. in the 1300 block of Dallas Drive, according to a news release on the department’s Facebook page.

According to police, they arrived on the scene and found two people with gunshot wounds in a vehicle.

Police have not yet released the identities of the victims but confirmed in a public safety press release that the victims were an adult male and an adult female.

The identities will be released pending a report by the Tarrant County Medical Examiner and notification of next of kin.

Allison Beckwith, a public information officer for the Denton Police Department, told The Dallas Express that “no suspects have been taken into custody, and the investigation is still in its preliminary stages.”

The Dallas Express traveled to Ridgecrest Apartments in Denton, where the shooting incident took place, as confirmed by Amy Cunningham, the public information liaison for the Denton Police Department.

John Martinez, the senior property manager at Ridgecrest Apartments, told The Dallas Express that he knew only much as the news and police know.

Martinez confirmed that the shooting occurred at the apartments.

Detectives and forensics professionals do not believe the shooting was random. Despite the ongoing investigation and efforts to locate the suspects involved, officials suggested that the community was not in danger.

“There is not any immediate threat to the public in this area,” a statement read on the department’s Facebook page.

The investigation is ongoing and will be updated as more information becomes available.

In Dallas, violent crime such as murder has seen an increase of more than 31% in the past year, according to the Dallas Police Department’s Daily Crime Brief.
