Assaults in District 5 — led by a city council representative who also sits on the Public Safety Committee — have risen significantly year-over-year for the month of January.

City Councilman Jaime Resendez saw overall assault offenses in his district shoot up by roughly 52% that month, with an especially sharp spike in aggravated assaults, which increased by about 67%, according to the City of Dallas Open Data crime analytics dashboard.

As previously reported in The Dallas Express, Resendez was recently named Crime Boss of the Month for the first time due to the shocking January crime statistics in his district, which also included significant hikes in motor vehicle thefts and general theft offenses.

Since the new year began, rampant crime in Resendez’s district has contributed to a citywide 17.19% increase in aggravated assaults year-to-date over the same period in 2022, as of Monday, according to a daily Dallas Police Department briefing.

Consequently, overall violent crime in Dallas is up 8.58% year-to-date.

The Dallas Express reached out to DPD to find out what is going on in Resendez’s district, which includes the Pleasant Grove neighborhood.

DPD shared with The Dallas Express some of the details of just a handful of the many unpublicized assaults that took place in Resendez’s district last month:

On January 5, in the middle of the afternoon, DPD responded to a call about a shooting in the 10500 block of Casnett Drive. An unknown suspect in a black Dodge Charger was firing a gun and hit an innocent bystander with a bullet.

The victim was taken to a local hospital for treatment, but the suspect has yet to be identified and currently remains free.

On January 6, police were dispatched to the 7300 block of Ravehill Lane. The preliminary investigation determined that two men were involved in an argument when things escalated.

One of the men allegedly hit the other in the head with a golf club and fled from the scene. The victim had to be taken to a local hospital for medical assistance.

On January 30, at around 2 a.m., police responded to a call on the 400 block of S. Buckner Boulevard. DPD found a locksmith who had been assisting a woman with her car until five unknown suspects severely beat him on the street. No additional information about this incident was made available.

A request for comment was sent to Councilman Resendez’s office, but The Dallas Express did not receive a response by press time.

The Dallas Express, The People’s Paper, believes that important information about the city, such as crime rates and trends, should be easily accessible to you. Dallas has more crime per capita than hotspots like Chicago, Philadelphia, Los Angeles, and New York, according to data from the FBI’s UCR database.
