A police officer shot and killed a man in Mesquite on January 31 after the suspect opened fire during a pursuit.

Mesquite police were alerted by another agency of an active warrant for a suspect in the area wanted for evading police.

Around 8:30 p.m. in the 800 block of Interstate 30, an officer approached a vehicle that matched the description within the alert.

The suspect exited the vehicle, began running, and then shot at the pursuing officer.

The officer fired back, striking the man who later died at a local hospital.

The identity of the suspect is not yet available, pending proper family notification.

The unnamed Mesquite officer of three years was not injured.

An investigation continues.
