North Texans can expect a reprieve from oppressive temperatures this week.

The National Weather Service in Fort Worth is forecasting slightly decreased temperatures throughout the remainder of the week, with the possibility of some strong storms. These somewhat cooler temperatures are expected to give way to triple-digit heat by the end of the week.

Bianca Garcia with the NWS in Fort Worth told The Dallas Express that temperatures throughout the week are expected to be “seasonably hot,” with highs remaining in the mid-to-upper 90s. There is a chance of scattered thunderstorms in the forecast for Wednesday.

“If we do have some outflow boundaries, they may have bigger thunderstorms like we saw [on July 3] in eastern Denton and Collin County. The main threats are damaging wind gusts,” said Garcia. “Some of these storms, they have been able to produce 50 to 60-mile-per-hour winds, just because it is so hot.”

Garcia said such storms are typical for summertime in Texas and cautioned that downburst winds might accompany them. Such downbursts can be particularly hazardous for boaters on open lakes, the NWS warned.

The NWS predicts a “better” and more widespread chance of showers and storms on July 6 as a weak cold front pushes through the area. Any storms this system produces will likely include gusty winds, heavy rain, and frequent lightning, but no severe conditions are currently in the forecast.

Rain chances will diminish on July 7 as the cold front pushes into the eastern portions of the state. The break from high temperatures will end by July 8.

Weather officials predict that as rain chances leave the area, “oppressively hot” conditions will return, with triple-digit temperatures becoming “common” by the weekend. High pressure is expected to bring about these triple-digit temperatures, with heat indices of 110 or above.

Triple-digit temperatures are expected to persist into the following week. North Texans are advised to practice heat safety as sweltering conditions return.
