Officials are asking Dallas residents to spend time with shelter dogs this New Year’s.

Dallas Animal Services is inviting volunteers to comfort shelter dogs during New Year’s Eve fireworks, during “Calming The Canines” from 10:30 p.m. to 12:30 a.m. December 31.

Participation is free.

“All the commotion and celebrating surrounding the New Year can be a very stressful time for pets,” officials wrote on Facebook. “So come read a book, listen to music, or just lend your peaceful presence to some pets in need.

The shelter is located at 1818 N. Westmoreland Road in Dallas. Officials said volunteers should arrive early or carpool, due to limited parking.

“We encourage participants to bring their own lawn chair/yoga mat for seating and a bag of treats for the pets,” officials wrote.

DAS is also hosting a free adoption event on January 3 in The Colony. The event will take place at 5754 Grandscape Blvd., from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m.

“Kick off the New Year with puppy kisses, wagging tails, and the chance to meet some incredible adoptable pets ready for their forever homes,” officials wrote. “Whether you’re looking for a playful sidekick, a cuddle buddy, or just need a dose of joy – this is the place to be.”

If residents cannot adopt at the moment, officials still invite them to stop by and spread the word.

“Every share helps a pet find home,” they wrote. “Let’s make New Year, New Home happen.”

DAS launched a “Home For The Holidays” campaign over the Christmas season, inviting residents to adopt or foster pets in need of a home.

“Every adoption opens a kennel for another pet in need, and the holidays are an especially meaningful time to welcome a new companion,” said Assistant Director Victoria Chittam Bennett in a press release.

Officials encouraged residents to adopt, foster, volunteer, or share adoptable pets to help save as many lives as possible.

“Together, we can bring home the holidays for the pets relying on us,” said Director Paul Ramon in the release.

This summer, DAS ranked fourth in America for the annual increase in animal adoptions, as The Dallas Express reported at the time. The shelter has been struggling with overcrowding and limited resources since 2021.
