Three Dallas City Council districts appear to be struggling when it comes to code compliance related to litter on vacant lots and commercial properties.
According to the City’s code compliance dashboard, Council Member Adam Bazaldua’s District 7 has logged a high number of such violations, clocking 803 so far this year.
Districts 2 and 6, represented by Council Members Jesse Moreno and Omar Narvaez, respectively, have also logged several hundred violations pertaining to litter on vacant lots and commercial properties. The dashboard shows there have been 492 documented violations in District 2 and 651 in District 6.
As previously reported by The Dallas Express, polling indicates residents have been displeased with “the amount of trash, litter, or junk” found strewn about their neighborhoods and “elsewhere in the City of Dallas.”
Despite the City’s large budget, its delivery of services has been a source of dissatisfaction among residents. Poor road maintenance, litter in the streets and parks, and high levels of homelessness and vagrancy have been cited by residents as key points of frustration in polling conducted by DX and even the City’s own satisfaction survey.
The litter issue, in particular, prompted the Metroplex Civic & Business Association (MCBA) to launch its own adopt-a-block program, in which participating businesses organize their own community clean-ups, as previously reported by DX.
“If the City is not taking charge of this [and] keeping our roads and streets and sidewalks clean … it’s our community, it’s our responsibility at the end of the day,” Louis Darrouzet, the CEO of MCBA, told DX back in October of 2023.
Citywide, the most common code violations logged by City officials include high weeds/grass; litter on private property, alleyway, or parkway; vegetation projecting over or into the street, alley, and/or sidewalk; brush/bulky trash out too early; and accessory outside storage.
