An Iraqi man complained about having his life savings stolen in Dallas shortly after he and his family relocated from Iraq into the United States.
Ahmed Alnajjar served the U.S. as an interpreter and fighter during the Iraq War. Two months ago, he was rewarded with a special visa that allowed him and his family to live in the U.S. so that they could avoid any retaliation.
Ahmed, alongside his wife and two kids, settled in North Dallas near Lovers and Greenville Avenue. With them, they brought $100,000 in cash, they say.
According to a report by CBS 5, Ahmed had a discussion with a bank employee on November 28 where they planned that he could deposit the money after confirming the proper documentation was in order.
Ahmed hid the money in his SUV, the report says. However, a thief broke into several vehicles, including an SUV belonging to Ahmed’s family, and made away with all their money.
Ahmed and his wife Amel Alzubaidi fear for their future, with their life savings gone. The couple, who have no income or jobs yet, are in dire need of help.
“I cannot imagine what will happen in the future for my kids,” Amel Alzubaidi says.
“I have a message for American people, when we were in Iraq we risked to help their sons, to protect their life,” Amel Alzubaidi says. “Now, when my kids are in their country, they destroyed my kid’s life. I ask them why? Why?”
The Dallas Police Department is looking into the matter and has launched an investigation. However, police have not released any information about possible leads or suspects.
