Two officers from the Denton Police Department Homeless Outreach Team were injured while trying to arrest a sex offender who had outstanding warrants.

According to the city, the Homeless Outreach Team responded to a call at about 3:13 p.m. on March 24.

The city said a resident had reported a growing homeless encampment in the Meadow Ridge Drive and Hinkle Drive area.

Upon arrival, officers spoke to several individuals experiencing homelessness at the scene.

Officers spoke with an individual, identified as 37-year-old Gerald Kosirog, at the scene.

The officers learned that Kosirog was a registered sex offender who had multiple warrants out of Tennessee for Sex Offender Registration Violations during questioning.

Reportedly, Kosirog started running from the officers while they were waiting for his warrant confirmation. The officers pursued the suspect and caught up to him.

Upon catching up to him, the 37-year-old allegedly took out a knife and stabbed the officers repeatedly.

According to the city, Kosirog tried to stab one officer in the chest while the second officer was stabbed across his face in a slashing motion. One of the officers struck Kosirog with a closed fist in self-defense.

The officer whom the suspect reportedly attempted to stab in the chest was wearing his rifle-plated vest, which protected him from the knife. However, the officer sustained minor bruising and swelling during the struggle.

The second officer suffered lacerations to his arm and head, and two of his wounds received stitches.

The Kosirog sustained a broken nose when the injured officer struck him.

All three of them were transported to local hospitals in separate ambulances.

All three men were released from the hospital on the evening of the same day. The suspect was later transported to the City of Denton Jail for the Sex Offender Registration Violation warrants out of Tennessee.

Detectives also applied for two more warrants for Aggravated Assault on a Peace Officer, which a local judge granted.
