The Dallas Police Department is cracking down on driving while intoxicated (DWI) incidents as the holiday season commences.

CBS 11 News reported that Dallas police officers will be spread throughout DWI hotspots in the city in an attempt to prevent accidents during the holiday season.

A Dallas DWI Task Force predicted that around 3.6 million people will be driving to their Thanksgiving destination.

The Task Force has entered into a partnership with Uber, offering discounts to Uber riders so they can get home safely during the holiday season. The partnership was formed because of the increase in serious accidents due to intoxicated drivers during the holidays.

CBS 11 News reported that Commissioner Elba Garcia said those who have pledged not to drink and drive can get a code and a $10 discount on their next Uber ride during the holiday season.

Police also released a number of safety measures to follow for those who plan to go out and drink.

The tips to prevent DWI from the Dallas Police Department include:

  • Have a designated driver at all times.
  • Call a taxi or use a rideshare app.
  • Stay overnight on a visit to a friend or relative.
  • Opt for non-alcoholic beverages instead of alcoholic ones.

Dallas Police also advised residents to avoid riding with drivers who have been drinking and to take away their car keys, if possible.
