Dallas police arrested a man after he allegedly shot someone in South Dallas during a fight on Halloween.

Police say 28-year-old Kevontre Jawauna Jones killed Jasmond Sanchez on Sunday at about 7 p.m. in the 2700 block of Coombs Street, near Al Lipscomb Way and South Malcolm X Boulevard in South Dallas. He was arrested on Monday morning.

An arrest warrant affidavit says that Sanchez and Jones were fighting, and Jones shot the other multiple times.

Sanchez was transferred to a hospital where he was pronounced dead.

According to police, Jones fled in a car with a juvenile and went downtown. When he got to downtown Dallas, he called 911 to report the shooting.

Officers say Jones told detectives that he shot Sanchez out of fear for his life. According to his account of the events that led to the shooting, Sanchez allegedly walked to his car, tried to force the door open, and gave him multiple punches in the head. He then shot Sanchez out of fear for his life, he said to detectives.

According to the affidavit, Jones initially told officers that he did not leave his car and said he didn’t know Sanchez. However, both their mothers said the two had known each other for years and were friends. Detectives wrote in the affidavit that Sanchez’s mother said that the pair had recently been on bad terms and that Jones had allegedly threatened to kill Sanchez several times.

Jones later admitted to knowing Sanchez but said the two had been fighting over drugs, the affidavit states.

Jones remains in custody at the Dallas County Jail, where he is being held on a murder charge with a bail set at $250,500. He is also held on a drug-possession warrant, officials say.
