A major vehicle crash involving multiple big rigs occurred on Interstate 30 in Garland Tuesday morning, according to a news release posted on the Garland police department’s Twitter account.

The westbound lanes of the I-30 freeway in Garland were closed between Zion Road and Bobtown Road due to a crash involving two 18-wheelers. Traffic was diverted, and lanes remained closed for hours as crews and police worked to investigate the cause and clean up the scene. The service road remained open.

The multi-vehicle crash just after 5:30 a.m. caused a fuel spill and a large fire. Local news reporter for NBC 5 Samantha Davies said hazmat crews were called to the scene.

Police urged commuters to seek alternate routes, but some vehicles behind the accident were stuck on the freeway, unable to move until lanes were cleared, according to Davies.

One alternate route commuters were advised to use was Highway 66; another was the President George Bush Turnpike, which offered an accessible exit before the major backups began.

The Dallas Express reached out to the Garland Police Department for additional information and comment but had not yet received any at the time of publication. Neither was it known at press time what led to the multiple-vehicle crash.
