A misunderstanding resulted in the lockdown of Grand Prairie High School on the afternoon of March 8.

According to a report by The Dallas Morning News, the Grand Prairie Police Department received a call concerning a hostage situation at Grand Prairie High School.

When responding officers arrived at the school, they discovered it was a misunderstanding.

District spokesman Sam Buchmeyer explained that students had been participating in a hostage negotiations drill in an isolated wing of the campus as part of Grand Prairie High School’s criminal justice pathway program. A maintenance employee, new to the campus, apparently overheard the conversation and called 911, Buchmeyer said.

Nearby, Grand Prairie Fine Arts Academy was also briefly locked down as a result of the assumed threat.

Buchemeyer stated that the incident was “only a classroom learning activity” and that no students or staff were in danger.
