Former Dallas Chief of Police David Brown is back in Dallas, having taken a job at Dallas County Judge Clay Jenkins’ law firm Loncar, Lyon, and Jenkins Law Firm.

“There’s no place like home,” said Brown, speaking with WFAA.

A Dallas native, Brown was the longest-serving police chief in Dallas from 2010 to 2016. He recently served three years as the superintendent of the Chicago Police Department, during which time Chicago saw a 64% increase in crime, as previously reported by The Dallas Express.

He spoke to the news outlet about Dallas’ current top cop, Eddie Garcia, and his thoughts on the chief’s approach to crime.

“I do think Dallas has a great chief of police in Chief Eddie Garcia,” said Brown. “He’s been able to put together strategies to reduce violence in collaboration with the community and other city departments.”

While some violent crimes have decreased year over year since the beginning of 2023, murders remain inexplicably high, with 95 logged through May 1 — a 23.4% increase compared to last year — according to a Dallas Police Department (DPD) report.

More up-to-date statistics are currently unavailable due to the alleged ransomware attack sustained by the City of Dallas earlier this month, as previously reported by The Dallas Express.

In his interview with WFAA, Brown also reflected on the mass shooting in July of 2016 that resulted in the murder of five DPD officers.

“The lessons learned were that together we can get through our most difficult times,” Brown said.

Brown also spoke on the recent mass shooting in Allen.

“I was really praying for the people of Allen. Praying for the police department. The Allen Police Department,” Brown said.

Brown also commented on how he looks forward to his new role, noting how he will be helping clients navigate the legal system in his capacity as chief operating officer for County Judge Jenkins’ law firm.

“I want to be an example to the people that there’s always a way that you can serve and help others,” said Brown.
