A Grand Prairie elementary school student brought a firearm to school in his backpack on Thursday, October 28, police say.
According to Grand Prairie police spokesperson Mark Beseda, the student found the unloaded gun in his backpack at Thurgood Marshall Leadership Academy and immediately notified a teacher.
Police revealed in a statement that the gun was secured at all times so that a child could not fire it and that the teacher took custody of the weapon immediately. Grand Prairie police said no charges would be filed against the child.
The Grand Prairie PD revealed that it is investigating how the gun got into the child’s backpack. The department is also partnering with child protective services on the incident.
District spokesman Sam Buchmeyer added that campus administrators contacted the parents of every child in the classroom. Authorities did not provide the child’s grade and age.
