On Monday morning, 14-year-old Julian Frederick ceremonially assumed the role of Dallas mayor for one day.

“Today, I am mayor for the day where I get to shadow the mayor, and I get to see the day in the life of a mayor,” said Frederick.

Frederick shadowed Mayor Eric Johnson through multiple events and got to see first-hand what being the city’s mayor entails.

“Well, there’s a lot of talking, a lot of shaking hands, a lot of people that want to get to meet with him,” he said. “It’s a very busy life, the life of a mayor.”

Frederick is a freshman at Greenhill School in Dallas and is currently running for class president.

“If any classmates are watching this, make sure to vote for Julian Frederick,” he said.

Outside of his political aspirations, Frederick runs his own company.

“I am the CEO of my own business called the Step Stool Chef, and the Step Stool Chef develops and sells cooking products and classes for kids,” he said.

“We’re all about empowering young kids to be leaders through cooking because we believe cooking is a great way for kids to build leadership skills like decision making, and also improvisation, kind of going with the flow,” he added.

Step Stool Chef offers kits, cookbooks, and aprons for kids, along with an online culinary school.

“I’m one of the head chefs. I also have my own team that’s an international team, so we go on our membership platform and we teach kids how to cook,” he said.

Another young local entrepreneur is 9-year-old Skylar of Skylar’s Sweet Snacks, who recently won $1,000 in a small business pitch competition, as previously reported in The Dallas Express.

Skylar and Julian are examples of Dallas children engaging in civic participation while also taking the initiative and responsibility by starting their own business ventures.
