A junior entrepreneur from North Texas recently won $1,000 in a small business pitch competition sponsored by the Texas Governor’s Commission for Women, the Beacon State Fund, and Lemonade Day.

The 9-year-old Skyler successfully pitched her business, Skylar’s Sweet Lemonade, to a panel of businesswomen who awarded her the prize.

Skylar began the small business when she was 5 years old, according to Lemonade Day. The business was formerly called Skylar’s Sweet Snacks.

“I create because I wanted to inspire other little kids who wanted to make their own business and see how much fun it is,” Skylar said in a Facebook video. “My lemonade flavors are strawberry lemonade, sweet tea lemonade, regular lemonade, and sugar-free lemonade.”

The junior entrepreneur has also published a children’s book titled Skylar’s Sweet Idea.

At the competition, panelists from the Governor’s Commission for Women asked Skylar some questions about herself and her business.

When asked what the hardest thing about running her business has been, she responded, “COVID. That’s the reason I have my lemonade in bottles is so I could keep less contact.”

She also told the panelists that her favorite part of running her business is “seeing the smiles on peoples’ faces after they try my lemonade.”

Two other young entrepreneurs from Central Texas were also given the opportunity to compete for $1,000, KWTX reported.

Savannah Fulton, 5, and Mia Grantham, 8, were the two junior business owners chosen to showcase their businesses.

In the West Texas region, Paige Smith was the winner of her small business pitch competition, the Lemonade Day Facebook page shared.

The Governor’s Commission for Women was established in 1967 to support women in Texas. Gov. Greg Abbott directed the commission to focus on raising awareness about human trafficking and promoting women-owned businesses.

Lemonade Day is an organization dedicated to helping young people learn to create their own businesses by helping them open and operate lemonade stands.

In 1996 the nonprofit organization the Beacon State Fund was established to promote volunteering and civic participation in Texas.
