I-30 in Dallas County is among the most dangerous roadways in the United States, according to a new report.

According to a report from truckinfo.net, the North Texas highway recorded 12 fatalities in 2022, the fifth-highest number of any highway in the country. That year, the entire state of Texas had the most speeding fatalities nationwide, with 1,371. California was the second-worst state, with 1,269 fatalities, followed by North Carolina, with 598.

On a per capita basis, Wyoming recorded the most speeding fatalities of any state, while Massachusetts had the least. In fact, Wyoming had over six times more speeding deaths per capita than Massachusetts.

When assessed based on vehicle-mile-traveled, Arizona had the highest number of speeding-related fatalities in the country, followed by South Carolina in second and Wyoming in third.

While crashes blamed on speeding have been falling since 2013, speeding-related traffic deaths have risen. Since 2019, speeding-related driving deaths are up almost 25%, representing around one-third of all traffic fatalities.

A study published last year found Dallas drivers ranked among the worst in the country. Forbes assessed the top 50 most populated cities in the United States, ranking them across five categories. Dallas had the fourth-highest number of fatalities caused by speeding, at 5.96 per 100,000 residents.

In 2022, The Dallas Express reported on some of the fastest speeding tickets issued that year in Texas. The top spot went to a 2018 Dodge Charger clocked at 201 mph in a 75 mph zone at 10:49 a.m. on Christmas Eve.

Last year, the Dallas City Council moved to lower the speed limit on a portion of U.S. 75 Central Expressway, a statistically dangerous roadway segment. The speed limit was dropped from 70 to 65 miles per hour on the stretch of highway from Mockingbird Lane to Woodall Rodgers Freeway. According to NBC, the Central Expressway was the site of 18 deaths and 87 serious injuries over five years ending in 2023.
