Crash in Mesquite Kills Off-Duty Police Officer

A crash that an alleged intoxicated driver caused killed an off-duty police officer from Oakwood, Texas on Monday, Oct. 18, in a construction area of IH-635 in Mesquite, WFAA reports.

Officers of the Mesquite Police Department were called to the scene of an accident around 1:15 a.m. in the 21400 block of southbound IH-635. Responding officers discovered that a 2015 Infiniti Q50 had collided with a 2017 Chevrolet Malibu.

The driver of the 2017 Chevrolet was identified as Mitchell Rector, 36, of Buffalo, Texas. Rector, an off-duty Oakwood Police Officer, died from injuries he sustained in the crash. Rector had been working in off-duty capacity in a construction area of the highway when the accident occurred.

The 2015 Infiniti’s driver was identified as Elias Luevano-Gonzalez, 21, from Dallas. Gonzalez was arrested and charged with intoxication manslaughter for his role in the accident. The 21-year-old sustained minor injuries from the accident.
