A person died in a morning house fire near downtown, Dallas Fire-Rescue reported Friday.

Crews arrived at the 3100 block of Bryan Street, just east of downtown, around 3:20 a.m. and found smoke coming from a one-story residence.

The incident was originally reported by Dallas police officers, who smelled smoke, Dallas Fire spokesperson Jason L. Evans said in an email to The Dallas Express.

The fire quickly was pushing through the room.

“Due to the proximity of the neighboring homes, several of them were evacuated as a precaution,” Evans said. “However, firefighters did an outstanding job containing the fire and isolating the damage, located mostly within the attic, to the structure of origin.

“There was one person inside the house when the fire began; and though rescue crews were able pull them out, they were pronounced dead at the scene.”

Neighbors were allowed back in their homes around 4:30 a.m.

“The cause of this fire will be listed as undetermined, pending the final ruling from the Dallas County Medical Examiner’s Office, on the victim’s cause of death,” Evans said.
