More than 19,000 runners from all 50 states and over 30 countries braved freezing temperatures Sunday to compete in the 54th BMW Dallas Marathon, according to race officials.

The annual event sent runners through multiple Dallas neighborhoods and around White Rock Lake before finishing at Dallas City Hall. Race organizers said 170 elite athletes competed, making it one of the marathon’s largest competitive fields to date.

Large Crowds and Youth Participation

The two-day event also included a Health and Fitness Expo at the Kay Bailey Hutchison Convention Center, which drew more than 50,000 visitors. More than 6,000 children participated in the weekend’s Kids 100M Dash and the two-mile Oncor Kids Race, one of the largest youth running events in the country.

“This year’s turnout truly showcased the spirit of our running community,” said Jason Schuchard, president of the BMW Dallas Marathon.

Marathon Results

Dallas runner Steven Fahy, 29, won the men’s marathon with a time of 2 hours, 23 minutes, earning a hometown victory.

“Not only is this extra special because it’s my hometown marathon, but it’s also where I train every day, and it’s something I get to share with a lot of my training partners,” Fahy said. “It’s just kind of extra sentimental for me.”

Alauna Carstens, 21, of Olympia, Washington, won the women’s marathon in 2 hours, 53 minutes.

Olympian Dakotah Popehn, 30, of Michigan, set a new women’s course record in the half-marathon, finishing in 1 hour, 12 minutes.
