Residents of a three-story apartment complex in far northeast Dallas were forced to flee their homes Tuesday night when a fire overtook the structure and damaged two dozen units.

Around 10 p.m. on April 19, firefighters arrived at the Forest Hills Apartments located in the 9600 block of Forest Lane, near Interstate 635.

Approximately 60-70 firefighters responded to the fire that began on the second floor and quickly spread to the third floor and then to the attic and roof.

According to Dallas Fire-Rescue spokesman Jason Evans, the blaze destroyed 24 units. No injuries were reported.

As of Wednesday morning, the flames were under control. Authorities are still investigating what caused the blaze.

A resident, Jneice Howard, told WFAA that her neighbor began knocking on doors to inform residents that a fire had started. She also stated that smoke detectors were “going off like crazy” throughout the apartment complex.

Howard is one of the residents who lost everything in the fire.

The American Red Cross is helping residents like Howard who were displaced. Roughly 100 individuals were affected.
