ZiGGY the robotic electric vehicle (EV) charger has been making the rounds at Dallas-Fort Worth International Airport as part of a demonstration program this summer.

As airport officials announced last month, five EV charging demonstrations of this cutting-edge mobile technology have been scheduled to take place in select customer parking lots through August.

The first of his kind, ZiGGY is an autonomous robotic wireless charger designed by EV Safe Charge.

The consumer shift toward EVs has led to a demand for improved charging infrastructure, especially in commercial parking lots and on the premises of multifamily residences.

Ford Motor Company even recently brokered a deal with market-leading Tesla to fabricate a special adapter so Ford EVs can charge at Tesla’s supercharger stations, as The Dallas Express reported.

Upgrading the electrical infrastructure to install EV chargers on certain premises can be a hassle, leading many EV owners to seek out a charger with its own power storage cells.

This is where ZiGGY comes in.

“The idea really came out of customer demand,” explained Caradoc Ehrenhalt, founder and CEO of EV Charge Safe, according to Ars Technica.

“What we’re hearing from people that want to use ZiGGY around the world — shopping centers, hotels, airports, etc. — is the common thread of the infrastructure being very challenging or not possible to put in or not cost effective or takes too much time,” Ehrenhalt added. “And so there really is the need for a mobile charging solution.”

In the case of DFW airport, ZiGGY will be able to move to wherever the car in need of charging is parked — granting customers flexibility since they do not have to park in any specially designated spots.

“Finding the right technology solutions to meet DFW’s future challenges is a major focus for our team,” said Paul Puopolo, DFW airport’s executive vice president of innovation, in the news release.

“We know that electric vehicles will be a big part of the future of transportation, and we are leaning into emerging technology now so that we are prepared to meet the needs of the airport community well into the future.”

Any EV owners planning to pass through DFW airport this summer wishing to test out ZiGGY’s charging abilities can sign up here.

As The Dallas Express reported, high volumes of passengers are expected to pass through this major hub as summertime travel picks up.
