TIME magazine has selected the Architects of Artificial Intelligence as its 2025 Person of the Year, recognizing the scientists, engineers, and executives who built the technology that dominated global conversation and reshaped daily life this year.

The designation caps a 12-month stretch in which AI moved from laboratory curiosity to indispensable tool, accelerating medical breakthroughs, boosting workplace productivity, and generating both awe and alarm.

From solving decades-old math problems to outperforming traditional hurricane forecasts, the systems advanced at a pace one study described as doubling capabilities nearly every two years.

“This is the single most impactful technology of our time,” Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang told TIME. “Every industry needs it, every company uses it, and every nation needs to build it.”

The announcement coincides with a surge in investment and geopolitical tension.

Hours after Donald Trump’s January inauguration, when tech leaders were prominently seated, a Chinese startup called DeepSeek released an AI model that rattled markets. The next day, OpenAI’s Sam Altman, Oracle’s Larry Ellison, and SoftBank’s Masayoshi Son unveiled plans for a $500 billion domestic AI infrastructure project they dubbed Stargate.

Those events set the tone for 2025: staggering innovation, enormous capital flows, and intensifying competition between the U.S. and China.

Progress carried steep costs. Training and running the largest models consumed vast amounts of electricity, displaced workers across sectors, and fueled misinformation through convincing deepfakes. Cybersecurity experts warned of autonomous large-scale attacks, while critics pointed to a concentration of influence among a small circle of tech billionaires not seen since the Gilded Age.

The selection marks the third time in four decades that TIME has honored a technological turning point. The personal computer earned the title in 1982; “You” — representing the rise of user-generated digital communities — was chosen in 2006.

This year’s honor goes not to one individual but to the collective architects who delivered what the magazine called “the age of thinking machines,” a force that “wowed and worried humanity” while transforming what is possible.
