Nissan is recalling certain 2020-2022 Sentra vehicles over possible steering control issues.

Nissan North America Inc. recently announced that it has recalled more than 236,000 Sentra sedans due to faulty tie rods in the vehicles’ front suspension that could lead to a loss of steering control and a higher risk of a crash, according to an August recall report from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA).

“In accordance with Nissan’s commitment to the safety and security of our customers and their passengers, Nissan is recalling certain MY2020-2022 Sentra vehicles for an issue affecting the tie rods,” Nissan told FOX Business.

Overall, Nissan’s recall has impacted a total of 236,238 Sentra vehicles made in the U.S. between 2020 and 2022.

The main concern stems from faulty tie rods on the vehicle’s left and right sides, which are used to connect both front tiers and enable the steering control system.

NHTSA documents show that between August 2021 and July 2023, Nissan received reports of 91 field incidents and five accidents attributed to the faulty tie rods.

According to NHTSA’s report, the tie rods on Nissan’s 2020-2022 model-year vehicles were manufactured with insufficient strength to withstand certain high-input operating conditions, such as hitting a curb. Under such conditions, the left and right tie rods may become bent or broken, resulting in unstable steering or a complete loss of functionality.

Owners impacted by the recall are advised to contact their Nissan dealer if they are experiencing any off-center steering wheel or vibration. If upon inspection the vehicle owner is confirmed to have a deformed tie rod, the dealer will replace both tie rods with new parts free of charge.

Nissan plans to mail all impacted Sentra owners a notification letter before October 5. Once Nissan obtains the new parts required to remedy the issue, the automobile manufacturer will send a second letter asking impacted owners to schedule their free repair.

Owners may contact Nissan’s customer service at 1-800-867-7669 and reference Nissan recall R23B3.
