Girls Take A Stand After Boy Switches To Their Cross Country Team

Girls on a Washington high school cross country team walked off their race Tuesday rather than compete against a male teammate who had moved from the boys’ team to the girls’ team during the season, according to an account published by Jennifer Sey.

The October 13 meet matched Camas High School against Battle Ground High School. Sey said 13 Camas girls walked approximately 50 meters from the starting line and then left the course, out of 24 Camas team entrants she described in her account.

Sey shared footage of the walk-off on X and credited Amy Sousa, who posts as @KnownHeretic. In a follow-up published Wednesday, Sey identified the male runner as Logan Mihailoff and said he finished second in Tuesday’s girls’ race.

Mihailoff competed in a boys’ junior varsity race September 5 before moving to girls’ competition, Sey wrote. She also reported that he won the girls’ race in a September 29 dual meet against Union High School.

An earlier walk-off

Tuesday’s action followed a September 15 walk-off by two runners from rival Skyview High School, Charlie Garrett and Sierra Retzlaff, who objected to competing against a biological male from Camas.

The girls lined up for that race with messages supporting female sports written on their arms and legs, then stepped off the course after the starting gun, they told Clark County Today.

“We did it because we didn’t want to act like we were OK with what was happening,” Retzlaff told the outlet.

Garrett said she worried about losing opportunities at larger meets. Both girls said their objection concerned competition, and they wanted to treat the Camas runner with respect.

The rule behind the dispute

Washington Interscholastic Activities Association rules permit male students who identify as girls to compete on girls’ teams. The association’s 2026-2027 handbook directs school personnel to work with athletes to determine eligibility and says that approval continues for the duration of a student’s participation without renewal each season or school year.

The Camas School District defended its approach in an earlier statement provided to Brandi Kruse, which Clark County Today reproduced October 6.

“Under current WIAA eligibility standards, students are permitted to participate in athletics consistent with their gender identity,” the district said.

The district said it would follow state law and WIAA requirements unless they changed. It also said student privacy obligations prevented it from discussing an individual student’s circumstances or eligibility.

Texas requires competition based on biological sex

Texas law takes a different approach. Education Code Section 33.0834 bars public school districts and open-enrollment charter schools from allowing students to compete in interscholastic events designated for the opposite biological sex, using an official birth certificate recorded at or near birth or corrected for a clerical error. The statute allows another government record if the birth certificate is unavailable.

The law includes an exception allowing female students to compete in male events when a corresponding female competition is unavailable.

Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton (R) announced an agreement with Dallas ISD on April 11, 2025, to enforce those requirements, a development The Dallas Express covered.

The agreed order required the superintendent to notify employees of the law and direct them to comply. It also prohibited employees from counseling parents or students on how to circumvent the statute. The superintendent agreed to the order without admitting wrongdoing or liability.
