A pipe bomb discovered along the shoreline of Lake Lewisville prompted a response from the Denton Police Department bomb squad after a resident found the device while metal detecting, authorities said.

According to the Lewisville Police Department, officers were called to Lake Park on Monday after receiving a report of a suspicious package. After officers examined the item, bomb squad personnel from the Denton Police and Fire Departments were called to the scene.

Investigators later determined the package was a pipe bomb. Officials said similar devices have recently been used illegally in the lake to kill fish, making them easier to catch.

Authorities said the bomb squad safely destroyed and discarded the device at the scene. The section of Lake Park where it was found has since reopened to the public.

Lewisville resident Mike Reiter said he discovered the device while searching the shoreline with a metal detector near the park’s frisbee golf course and swimming area.

“I held a freaking bomb in my hand that one of you might have made and left behind,” Reiter wrote in the City of Lewisville Facebook group. “This was at the frisbee golf course in the swim area where kids swim all the time.”

Police did not say whether any arrests have been made related to the device or the reported use of pipe bombs in the lake.
