Beloved wife, mother, and conservative leader Rene Poe passed into the arms of Jesus on June 27 at the age of 86.

Born Bessie Irene Nicholson, Rene lived the last 30 years of her life in Granbury, Texas with her husband Don Poe, who shared the news of Rene’s passing with their many friends across the state.

Rene was loved for her beautiful smile, sweet disposition, and willingness to serve others; and respected for her strength and dedication to faith, family, community, and country.

She and Don were known in Granbury and beyond for their grassroots activism. They were recognized in 2015 with a Texas Conservative Leader Award and have been involved with the Hood County Republican Club since its founding in 2019.

Rene’s passing sparked an outpouring of love and remembrances from friends and fellow conservative activists across Texas.

“Truly a loss for all who knew Rene! She was a blessing to the community and to me personally,” said fellow conservative leader Fran Rhodes.

“What a huge loss for all those who knew her. She was always a tremendous encouragement,” added Julie McCarty, another conservative leader.

“She is loved by so many of us. What a patriot. Texas lost a great soul,” said conservative activist Barry Schlech.

“What a great friend she has been to so many… I’m so blessed to have known her,” added grassroots activist Brett Rogers.

Hood County friends also mourned Rene’s passing.

“Such a heartbreaking loss,” said Christine Leftwich. “A beautiful ray of sunshine she was, with so much wisdom to share. I cherish all the visits and time spent with her and working together at the Hood County Republican Party.”

“She was such a beautiful soul and a blessing to many. She did so many great things for Hood County,” added Alicia Miller.

“We are all changed for the better for having known Rene. She touched so many lives,” noted Hood County Commissioner Nanette Samuelson.

Respect for Rene extended statewide and beyond.  On the day of her death, a flag was flown in her honor at the state capitol in Austin.

“Our family is overwhelmed by all the prayers and comments about the loss we share,” Don posted on Facebook. “Rene was loved and respected by many, so thank you all. We really miss her.”

A celebration of Rene’s life will be held on July 12 in Granbury.
