The Los Angeles City Council is trying to determine if it can take any legal action against the State of Texas over Gov. Greg Abbott’s busing of unlawful migrants to the California city.

Councilmembers recently voted in favor of instructing the city attorney’s office to investigate whether Abbott violated any laws by transporting the migrants. The vote occurred the same day that 42 migrants arrived in Los Angeles from Texas, which brought the grand total to 435.

Debates during the city council meeting on Wednesday included a claim that Republican governors who send unlawful migrants to Democrat-led cities are racists.

“The competition between these Republican governors about who could be more racist, I think, is just an utter failure and shows clearly that they do not have any intention to govern effectively,” said Councilmember Hugo Soto-Martinez, per Fox News Digital. “The callous and disregard for lives of these families deserves their full investigation and accountability into the criminal actions of wrongdoing of Gov. Greg Abbott.”

As previously reported by The Dallas Express, Abbott has been dispatching buses full of unlawful migrants to several cities across the United States to raise awareness of the border security crisis at the U.S.-Mexico border, which the governor has called an “invasion.”

Dozens of counties in Texas have passed resolutions declaring the ongoing mass unlawful migration an invasion.

Abbott spokesman Andrew Mahaleris said that Los Angeles should welcome the migrants Abbott has been sending because it is a self-proclaimed sanctuary city.

“The LA City Councilmembers are complete hypocrites,” Mahaleris told Fox News Digital. “In June, they unanimously voted to become a sanctuary city, welcoming migrants to the city. Texas began busing migrants to sanctuary cities like Los Angeles last year to provide relief to our overrun and overwhelmed border communities.”

Mahaleris said cities like Los Angeles should pressure the federal government to address the situation at the border.

“Instead of complaining about dealing with a fraction of the border crisis our small border towns deal with every day, the City Council should call on President Biden to take immediate action to secure the border — something the President continues failing to do,” he said, per Fox News Digital.

Abbott’s program has sent more than 30,000 unlawful migrants to cities such as Denver, New York City, Washington, D.C., and Chicago.

Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass voiced frustration over the alleged lack of communication with Texas over the buses of unlawful migrants.

“We hear about the buses headed our way when they’re on the way. We have no idea who’s going to be on the bus, how many people it is or what condition they’re going to be in when they get here,” Bass said, per Fox News Digital. “Sometimes they haven’t had any food, barely had enough water.”
