An 11-year-old boy was fatally shot during an apparent altercation between two teenagers in Oak Cliff on Sunday.
Police responded to a shooting in the parking lot of an apartment complex located at the 3300 block of Southern Oaks Boulevard near E. Overton Road.
The young victim, identified by his family as D’evan McFall, was taken to a nearby hospital, where he later died.
The investigation led authorities to believe that McFall had been struck by a bullet fired during a fight between two girls under the age of 18.
He had been standing nearby when, during the altercation, one of the girls reportedly produced a handgun and fired it at the other girl, but missed.
The 14-year-old girl who allegedly fired the handgun and fatally wounded McFall left the scene before police officers arrived. She was later located at a nearby apartment complex and taken into custody by the authorities.
She is currently being held at Dallas’ Henry Wade Juvenile Justice Center and is charged with murder.
The weapon involved in the shooting has been retrieved by law enforcement, but no information has been released about where it came from or who it belonged to, according to CBS DFW.
No one but the victim has been identified thus far and the investigation is ongoing.
The incident happened in Councilmember Chad West’s District 1, an area of Dallas which saw a rise of 45.43% in crime year-over-year in June, earning him the title of Crime Boss two months in a row.
The rush of violent incidents — especially those involving firearms — seen in the first weeks of this year suggests that the steady rise in crime will not be slowing down in the near future.
