Now that Christmas is over, it’s time to take down the decorations and dispose of your natural Christmas tree. Recycling is the best solution. Christmas trees can be converted into mulch and compost.

Every city has different locations where natural trees can be dropped off for recycling. Artificial trees or trees sprayed with “snow” cannot be recycled. Before you dispose of your tree, be sure to remove any wires, tinsel, lights, or any other decorative items, and don’t cover it with plastic.

Here’s a list of where, when, and how to recycle your Christmas tree in Dallas County.

If you bring a bag or bucket and a shovel to the drop-off site before January 31, you can pick up some FREE mulch for your garden, landscape, or to use as livestock bedding.

Mesquite –  Natural Christmas trees can be put out during your bulk trash pickup days.

Richardson – Save space in the landfill and “Tree Cycle” your Christmas tree this year.

There are two ways Richardson residents can “tree cycle,” through February 1, 2022:

  • Drop trees at the Municipal Service Center (1260 Columbia Drive), open twenty-four hours, seven days a week.
  • Call 972-744-4111 and request a Brush and Bulky Item Collection (BABIC), then set the tree on your front curb for collection. Make sure to request that the tree be collected for composting.

The City of Richardson and the Richardson Police Department are also helping to prevent crime while recycling by providing a safe way to dispose of large cardboard boxes. Recycling cardboard boxes rather than leaving them on the curb keep you from advertising the new expensive items you have in your home. Residents can bring their flattened cardboard to these locations from until February 1, 2022:

  • Custer Park – 700 W. Renner Road (near the Tennis Courts)
  • Recycle Center – 102 N. Cottonwood Drive
  • Huffines Park – 1500 Apollo Road (near Tennis Courts)
  • Breckinridge Park – 5200 Park Vista Road (near baseball complex)

If you prefer to throw away your boxes, be sure to dispose of them using large black trash bags to avoid broadcasting what used to be packaged inside.

Rowlett – Christmas trees may be placed outside for pickup by FCC Waste Management on your regular trash collection day. Place trees 7′ and under by polycarts; taller trees go out front with your bulk trash.
