For the second month in a row – and the fourth time this year – City of Dallas District 1 Councilman Chad West has been named The Dallas Express Crime Boss of the Month, this time for July. District 1 saw a 45.43% increase in crime when comparing June 2022 to June 2021.

The Crime Boss of the Month title is given to the Dallas City Council member whose district has experienced the greatest percentage increase (or most minor decrease) in crime every month.

Since the start of 2022, District 1 has seen an increase in six of the seven months of data. After a slight decrease in May, crime has shot up again in the last two months, earning West the dubious distinction of Crime Boss of the Month.

District 1’s 2022 Crime Scores at a Glance:
(*Denotes Crime Boss Title)

  • January: +13.4%*
  • February: +24.06%
  • March: +20.51%
  • April: +12.85%*
  • May: -2.29%
  • June: +54.91%*
  • July: +45.43%*

Of the 30 crime categories reported in the City of Dallas, District 1 saw increases in 11 in June 2022.

Leading the way, as it has for the city overall throughout 2022, Motor Vehicle Theft crimes saw the largest increase in District 1, shooting up 78.82% in June ’22 (from 85 reports in ’21 to a total of 152 this June).

Across the City of Dallas as a whole, Motor Vehicle Theft increased by 6.42% year-over-year (1,978 in June ’21 to 2,105 in June ’22).

Other increases in Dallas District 1 are as follows:

  • Larceny/Theft Offenses, up 21 (from 91 in June ’21 to 112 in June ’22);
  • Drug/Narcotic Violations, up 16 (from 13 to 29);
  • Robbery, up 14 (from 7 to 21);
  • Assaults, up 11 ( from 24 to 35);
  • Burglary/Breaking & Entering, up 11 (from 27 to 38);
  • Destruction/Damage/Vandalism of Property up 9 (from 35 to 44);
  • Nonviolent Family Offenses, up three (from one to four);
  • Counterfeiting/Forgery, up one (from one to two);

Homicide Offenses – which continue to increase in the city — also saw a year-over-year increase in District 1 for the second month in a row, up from zero to one in June ’22 compared to June ’21.

The Dallas Express reached out to West’s office again — as we did last month —  to inquire if District 1’s Public Safety Advisory Committee has brought the council member any new information and how the district has continued its attempts to combat crime.

The Dallas Express received an automated email response from the councilman stating, “Thank you for reaching out! Please note that I am out of the office until August 1, 2022, for City Council’s summer recess. I will be traveling domestically and internationally with family and will have limited access to emails.”

The Dallas Express, The People’s Paper, believes that important information about the city, such as crime rates and trends, should be easily accessible to you. Dallas has more crime per capita than hotspots like Chicago, Philadelphia, Los Angeles, and New York, according to data from the FBI’s UCR database.

Chad West is a great public servant. Very proud to see how he’s doing.
