Obituary for William Thad “Tal” Roberts III

William Thad “Tal” Roberts, III passed away peacefully on June 26, 2021, surrounded by his loved ones. His brief battle with cancer may have taken him before we were ready to say goodbye, but we are filled with the joy of knowing that he is now surrounded by the eternal love of Christ. Tal was born in Shreveport, Louisiana on December 8, 1942 to Thad and Kitty Roberts. He was big brother to his much-loved sisters, Cindy and Sybi. The son of a music minister and children’s choir director, Tal’s life was marked by a great love of music and a steady, enduring faith. After graduating from Lamar High School in Houston in 1960, Tal went on to Baylor University. He earned both an undergraduate and Law degree from Baylor, but more importantly, it’s where he met the love of his life, Nancy Curtis. They married in September 1966 and had two daughters, Jennifer and Rebecca, both of whom thought the world of their dad. Tal joined the FBI after Law School and he and Nancy spent time in Ohio and Illinois before settling in Dallas in 1969. Tal joined The Baptist Foundation of Texas (now HighGround Advisors) in 1969 as an associate in the legal division and was then later promoted to Executive Vice President and Chief Operating Officer, serving until his retirement in 1997.

After retiring, Tal was privileged to have the opportunity to focus on some of his favorite things like birding, traveling, reading, going to the symphony, singing in his church choir and spending time with family and the countless friends he made during his lifetime. In the year 2000, however, his first of seven grandchildren were born and being “Gramps” instantly became his new favorite thing. He loved his grandchildren dearly and they loved him back. One of his favorite places to spend time with them was in New Harbor, Maine, where he and Nancy visited each summer for over 20 years. He introduced all of us to the beauty of the Maine Coast and was an expert at creating the most meaningful memories that will be with us forever. Throughout his life, Tal found great joy in giving of his time, talent and treasure. He was a friend to all and left us with a lasting example of what it looks like to live with a servant’s heart.

Tal is preceded in death by his parents, Thad and Kitty Roberts. He is survived by his loving and devoted wife Nancy, with whom he would have celebrated 55 years of marriage this fall; daughter and son-in-law Jennifer and Travis Armayor, and their children Tal, Margot, Clara and Leah; daughter and son-in-law Rebecca and

Jeff Montgomery, and their children Lewis, Sam and Lucy; his sister and brother-in-law, Cindy and David Bragg, and their daughter and her family, Chloe and Craig Brevelle, Grayson and Daniel; his sister and brother-in-law, Sybi and Ron Ward and their children and their families, Amy and Ed Meier, Penelope and Nolan, and Aaron and Stephanie Ward.
