In less than 30 days, the annual State Fair of Texas opens but warns fairgoers to use precautions due to the rising number of COVID-19 infections.

The State Fair of Texas runs from Sept. 24 through Oct. 17 in Fair Park to celebrate all things Texan by promoting agriculture, education, and community involvement through quality entertainment in a family-friendly environment. This year’s theme, “Howdy, Folks!” aims to bring back fair fun to the Lone Star State.

Typically more than 2.5 million guests attend the 24-day event.

According to a State Fair of Texas press release, “Big Tex needs every fairgoer to do their part and most of all, be respectful of others and do the right thing. The current health situation makes for a challenging backdrop for the 135-year State Fair of Texas tradition.”

Fair organizers urge attendees “to follow our health guidelines — not because it’s mandated, but because it’s the right thing to do.”

The Dallas County Health & Human Services will offer free COVID-19 vaccines at Big Tex Circle. Those who get vaccinated at the fair will receive $20 in food and ride vouchers.

Lastly, officials are asking fairgoers to wear a face covering. Since nearly 80% of fair events and activities are outdoors, mandating masks have been deemed too difficult to enforce.

However, guests are asked to wear a mask in the following settings if they are older than age two and medically able to wear one:

  • Indoors, for both vaccinated and unvaccinated people.
  • Outdoors in crowded settings, especially if you are not vaccinated.
  • Some independent vendor booths may require everyone in their booth to wear a mask.

To get tickets for the fair, visit Big Tex.

Fair organizers continue to monitor the COVID situation and may issue revised guidelines as opening day approaches.
