The Tunnels to Tower Run and Walk honors first responders and will be held in October.

As the nation reflects on the 20th anniversary of the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks, first responders continued to be honored.

One way to keep the memories of the perished and the surviving brave heroes alive is with the Tunnels to Towers Run and Walk.

Registration is ongoing for the local event, which will coincide with many national events to honor first responders, remember 9/11, and raise funds.

Locally, on Oct. 16 at the Shops at Clearfork in Fort Worth, the event will begin at 8 a. m.

The event honors all who lost their lives that day and supports first responders and military members who make extraordinary sacrifices in the line of duty.

The Fort Worth run and walk honors Officer Garret Hull, who was shot and killed Sept. 14, 2018, while attempting to apprehend a group of serial robbers who had victimized numerous people and were a violent threat to the community.

“The purpose of this race and walk is not only to honor Officer Hull’s sacrifice to this city but also to shine a light on the tremendous support that Tunnel to Towers provides to those families whose loved ones have chosen a life of service,” said William Hix, a retired Fort Worth Police Department officer who worked with Hull and Fort Worth Tunnel to Towers event organizer.

During Hull’s 17 years in the FWPD, he served in specialized tactical units, including the Special Response Team, Narcotics Division, and Tactical Intelligence Division. His wife and two daughters survive Hull.

The Tunnel to Towers Run and Walk Series was created to honor the life and death of Stephen Siller, a New York City firefighter who lost his life on Sept. 11, 2001, after strapping on his gear and running through the Brooklyn Battery Tunnel to the Twin Towers.

Online registration for the Tunnels to Towers Run and Walk is open through Oct. 13.
