On May 12, the Dallas Police Department arrested two people in connection to a deadly shooting incident during a concert last month.
As reported by The Dallas Express, officers responded to the 5000 block of Cleveland Road, near Bonnie View Road and Interstate 20, at approximately 11:30 p.m. on April 2.
Responding officers found 26-year-old Kealon Dejuane Gilmore lying near a stage with a fatal gunshot wound to the head. Police also found 16 others injured at the shooting scene.
Dallas police said gunshots rang during a concert that was promoted on social media for the second annual “Epic Easter Bike Out and Field Party,” scheduled for April 2.
According to The Dallas Morning News, Dallas police arrested 25-year-old Astonial Calhoun and 26-year-old Devojiea Givens in connection to the shooting. Both suspects were booked into the Dallas County Jail on May 12.
Per the reports, Givens faces a charge of deadly conduct by discharging a firearm, while Calhoun faces a charge of deadly conduct. Authorities did not reveal why both men were not charged with murder.
However, Dallas Police Chief Eddie García said, during a May 12 press conference, that charges against both men could change in the future.
Dallas police revealed that law enforcement arrested Givens in Hutchins. At the time of the shooting, the 26-year-old had been out on bond stemming from a deadly conduct charge in late January.
According to the arrest warrant affidavit issued for the January incident, Givens allegedly pointed a firearm at a man picking up a car in the parking lot at his apartment complex.
Authorities also revealed that Calhoun was arrested in Cedar hill.
During the press conference, Shalonda Gilmore, the victim’s mother, said the arrests have unburdened her.
“I still don’t have my son at the end of the day. It’s just the beginning. It’s going to be a long process,” Gilmore said during the press conference.
Dallas police said the investigation is still ongoing. Garcia asked anyone with images, videos, or any information from the shooting that might help solve the case to contact the department.
“Our men and women care about our victims in this case and their families, and most of all, they care about our city,” García said during the news conference. “As I’ve said before, we have zero tolerance for this violence in Dallas.”
Calhoun’s bond was set at $1,500, and Givens’ at $15,000. It’s not clear if both men had any legal representatives.
