Three abandoned children were found and living inside of an apartment complex in Harris County. Skeletal remains were also discovered inside of the apartment at 3500 block of Green Crest.

Police were called to the residence to conduct a welfare check. Inside they discovered a 15-year-old, a 10-year-old, and a 7-year-old. It appeared to police the children had been living in the home alone without adult supervision for some time.

Skeletal remains were also discovered and appear to be that of a child, according to KHOU. Police believe the remains could be a sibling. The remains were found out in the open inside the apartment. According to police, the remains have been in the home for an extended period of time given the amount of decay.

It also appeared that the oldest of the children was the caretaker of all of them. It is unclear if any of the children were enrolled and attending school.

“[We’re] connecting all the dots at this point, it appears [the kids] were in there while the body was deteriorating,” Sheriff Ed Gonzalez said.

Gonzalez called the scene “horrific” during his press conference. Adding, “In our experience, it’s always best to not speculate and just let the investigation take its course, but [this is a] very disturbing set of circumstances, so we definitely want some answers for these children.”

Gonzalez went on to share that the children are in custody and safe. They were found in deplorable conditions. Police are currently trying to track down their parents or relatives.

This is a developing story with multiple city departments now involved. Gonzalez would not share what the children had to say as it is part of the ongoing investigation.
