Only two weeks of Texas High School football remain, and now only four teams are left in each district.
The story of the quarterfinals was no doubt in 5A-Division II. South Oak Cliff defeated Lucas-Lovejoy 42-21 at the Ford Center in Frisco to advance to the state semifinals for the first time since 1970. South Oak Cliff is looking to become the first Dallas ISD team to win a state championship since 1958 when Booker T. Washington High School won in the Prairie View Interscholastic League.
South Oak Cliff used a huge first half to propel itself to the victory. Lovejoy entered the game having lost just one game all season and with a high-powered offense, but they were held scoreless the first two quarters while South Oak Cliff scored 28 points. In the second half, South Oak Cliff built its lead to as wide as 42-7 before Lovejoy added two touchdowns once the game was well past decided.
South Oak Cliff, which finished the regular season fifth in the statewide rankings, will play fourth-ranked Lubbock-Cooper in the semifinal at 7:30 p.m. Friday at Abilene’s Shotwell.
In 6A-Division I, a matchup between two traditional powerhouses did not live up to the hype. Third-ranked Southlake Carroll beat Allen decisively 47-21 at Denton’s Apogee Stadium. Allen took a quick 7-0 lead, but Carroll responded with 34 straight points to take complete control of the game.
Carroll has now won 26 of its last 27 games, with its only loss in that period coming in last year’s state title game to Austin Westlake.
Carroll will face fellow DFW team and fourth-ranked Duncanville in the semifinal at 4 p.m. Saturday at McKinney ISD Stadium. Duncanville defeated Desoto 38-20 in the quarterfinals.
In 5A-Division I, Mansfield Summit pulled off the upset and avenged a loss in district play by defeating fourth-ranked Colleyville-Heritage 21-9 at the Birdville Fine Arts/Athletics Complex in North Richland Hills.
Summit lost three games in the regular season, including a 35-34 loss to Heritage, and did not finish the season with a ranking. Now they are making their second consecutive appearance in the semifinals. Last season Summit lost 49-35 to eventual state champions Denton Ryan.
Summit is looking to become the first-ever Mansfield ISD team to win a state title. Their opponent in the semifinal is second-ranked and undefeated College Station, which eliminated the defending champions Denton Ryan, who was the top-ranked 5A team in the quarterfinal. The game will be played at 7 p.m. Friday at Hewitt’s Panther Stadium.
