Texas Land Commissioner Dawn Buckingham announced that applications are now open for the Tuskegee Airmen Texas State Veterans Home in Fort Worth.

The 100,000-square-foot facility at 2200 Joe B. Rushing Road opened in March and can house 120 veterans. The home represents Texas’s latest commitment to veteran care, offering free residency to eligible veterans with 70% or higher service-connected disability ratings. It’s the tenth state-run long-term care facility for veterans, their spouses, and Gold Star Parents.

Named after the pioneering African American combat pilots of World War II, the facility honors aviators who flew over 15,000 missions across North Africa and Europe. The Tuskegee Airmen earned more than 150 Distinguished Flying Crosses, 60 Purple Hearts, and the Congressional Gold Medal.

The home features 72 rooms, including 24 private accommodations. A specialized memory support neighborhood can serve 30 residents with dementia or Alzheimer’s care needs.

The facility divides residents into four “neighborhoods,” each with its own living spaces, dining areas, and outdoor gardens. Amenities include hospitality stations for snacks, quiet rooms, screened patios, and various therapy programs.

Residents can participate in art, exercise, music, gardening, yoga, and pet therapy sessions. The home organizes outings to museums, restaurants, sporting events, and weekend activities like football parties and military celebrations.

The Texas Health and Human Services Commission and the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs regulate the state-owned facility. The Veterans Land Board maintains an on-site representative to ensure quality care standards.

Applications are available through the Texas General Land Office website. The Fort Worth location serves a community with deep ties to veteran advocacy and support.
