As the year draws to a close, a local nonprofit in North Texas is offering help to breast cancer patients in need.

The Barbara Cares Foundation, a Fort Worth-based organization that offers support to those battling breast cancer, is offering financial assistance to patients currently undergoing treatment in the area.

With only a few weeks remaining in 2024, the foundation has $10,000 in funding available, which it aims to distribute by Christmas Eve, according to CBS News. Eligible patients living in Tarrant County could receive up to $2,000 in financial grants, which can be used for a variety of needs, from medical bills to purchasing gifts for loved ones this holiday season.

“We want to be able to provide some joy, be able to put some smiles on people’s faces, whether it’s them getting resources to help them to make it to appointments, whether it’s them buying a loved one a gift,” Xavier Sanders, the Executive Director of Barbara Cares told CBS.

The Barbara Cares Foundation, established six years ago, has built a reputation for providing “essential support services for breast cancer patients and their families.” From financial grants and healthy meals, to various types of different counseling, the nonprofit aims to ease the burdens associated with cancer treatment for patients and their support systems.

The deadline to apply for the Barbara Cares Foundation’s financial assistance is Christmas Eve, December 24. Applicants must be undergoing active breast cancer treatment and reside in Tarrant County.

Those interested can learn more and submit applications on the Barbara Cares website, where readers can also find more information about future volunteer opportunities and ways to give back to the non-profit in the future.

In addition to providing grants for patients in need, Barbara Cares is encouraging the community to focus on the benefits of early detection, offering free mammograms at their event this Saturday. Early detection is key to fighting the battle against breast cancer. The American Cancer Society reports that when breast cancer is diagnosed at an early stage and is localized, the five-year relative survival rate is 99%.

The early detection screenings offered by the Barbara Cares Foundation will take place from 8 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. at Parkside Missionary Baptist Church in Fort Worth.
