A Texas Christian University instructor is under fire for having far-left Antifa sympathies and anti-police rhetoric.
“Apparently @TCU is hiring far-Left Antifa activists as English professors now. Don’t send your kids to this school thinking it’s actually Christian & conservative – it’s not,” Protect Texas Kids director Kelly Neidert wrote on X about Professor Alexandra Edwards. Neidert included some photos of Edwards, as well as a post from Edwards’ X account.
In one photo, which turns out to be Edwards’ profile photo on X under the username “nonmodernist,” she holds up a coffee cup in front of her face that reads, “Less Cops, More Cats.”
A screenshot of one of her posts from X reads,”im out at the fort worth botanic garden where about 50 protestors are demonstrating with signs and chants and rums.” Pictured is a flag for a group called Antifaschistische Aktion, a militant anti-fascist organisation in the Weimar Republic from which the group Antifa takes its name. Antifa uses the same logo as Antifaschistische Aktion.
Edwards also has a history of promoting anti-police sentiments on X.
In a post from 2021, she writes, “y’all we have really got to abolish the police, this shit is deranged.”
A post from 2023 reads, “i remember trying to connect the dots between the murders of george floyd, rayshard brooks, and scout schultz in a statement my dept was putting out in 2020. our program director snapped at me ‘that’s not the same thing’ she really thought you could separate racism from policing.”
“so to sum up: ACAB includes dunkin donuts, waffle house, sonic, arby’s, and buffalo wild wings,” Edwards posted on X in 2023.
“ACAB” is an acronym for “All Cops Are Bastards,” according to Wikipedia.
Edwards’ posts have been met with criticism from several local leaders.
“Ashamed to see that our local university [TCU] is living up to the bad reputation of NE Ivy League schools that are indoctrinating students instead of full emphasis on educating. We are blessed in Tarrant County to have strong law enforcement and we deserve better than an anti-police radical professor at our university,” Fort Worth businesswoman Cheryl Bean told DX.
“It is horrifying that anyone would talk about abolishing the police, when just yesterday one brave member of our [law enforcement] community was shot multiple times. TCU should not have anyone espousing those kind of dangerous and radical ideas to impressionable college students,” Tarrant County Republican Chairman Bo French told DX.
Some leaders have called for Edwards to be terminated from TCU.
“As a veteran police officer and alumni of Texas Christian University, I am deeply troubled by reports that a university employee would openly espouse dangerous anti-law enforcement rhetoric. Our nations police officers are heroes. They work around the clock to keep our communities safe and many have sacrificed their lives doing just that. There is no place in our country, especially not in Fort Worth, Texas, for anti-police bias or discrimination. I am hopeful that this issue will be addressed by university administration.” Tarrant County Commissioner Manny Ramirez told DX.
On Friday, Edwards posted on X, “good morning! yesterday, while i was watching the state try (and ultimately fail) to convict an antifascist of a crime outside a drag show in 2023, kelly neidert and carlos turcios launched a targeted harassment campaign against me. this is interesting given what i saw in court.”
Others have defended Edwards arguing that it is free speech.
“Academic freedom includes the right of teachers or researchers to engage in political speech as citizens free from institutional discipline or retribution,” Texas Conference of the AAUP posted on X.
“This is awful, I’m so sorry you’re dealing with this nonsense. I really hope the school supports you,” Mike Bond posted on X.
The Dallas Express contacted Edwards and Jean M. Pickett, chief of staff in the office of the chancellor and president, but did not receive a response.
