A pregnant Texas woman stopped an armed attacker after drawing her handgun in self-defense outside a Houston convenience store on Tuesday.

Originally shared on Twitter by an account called Grizzy’s Hood News, the video appears to show a man stepping out of a car while pointing a gun at a couple before pistol-whipping the man. The woman draws a concealed handgun from her purse and fires at the assailant, who falls to the ground after being shot.

The man who was pistol-whipped also draws his handgun and instructs the attacker to stay on the ground until first responders arrive.

During the brief encounter, a second vehicle pulls away from the scene. Surveillance footage showed that people in that car had rifles.

The account explained, “Yesterday, a male attempted to rob a pregnant woman at the Texaco on Berry and Fulton. The lady was able to call her husband who was inside the gas station.”

“The husband came out, and the suspect then began to make threats and he ran up on them armed,” the description added. “Both husband and wife were armed!”

The location of the attack was only a block from a Houston Community College campus and fewer than two miles from several elementary schools, a prep school, a Catholic church, a public library, and a Texas Health and Human Services Office.

Police allegedly identified the attacker as 39-year-old Mario Duque, who reportedly asked the husband, “Do you want to die tonight?” per ABC 13. Duque is a convicted felon, meaning he illegally possessed the weapon he purportedly brandished during the altercation.

The suspect is expected to survive his wounds and faces charges, including assault with a deadly weapon, per Click2Houston.

The woman, whose name was not released, said, “Thank God we had our guns. I’ve never been happier to be a gun carrier.”

Political commenter Rogan O’Handley remarked on the video, saying, “This is why concealed carry is such an important Constitutional right.”

“Pregnant woman in Texas is approached by an armed robber,” he explained. “He pistol whips the man she’s with, she shoots him multiple times, and the innocent live to see another day.”

Others, however, suggested allowing people to carry guns in self-defense was dangerous.

Pam Berg, a self-described “yellow dog Democrat,” reacted to O’Handley’s comment, suggesting, “The only people who have to carry and hide a gun, are some very sick people themselves. Paranoid, impotent, and more.”

“She could have just as easily had that gun turned onto herself by him and be dead,” Berg added.

Texas passed a constitutional carry law in 2021, allowing citizens not otherwise prohibited from possessing a gun to carry one without a permit.

According to the daily crime analytics dashboard, the City of Dallas is no stranger to weapons law violations — like the illegal carrying of a firearm by a felon — with 868 reports filed in just the first four months of the year.
